This large aperture zoom lens has improved optical performance and retains close-up ability with a minimum focusing distance of 100cm/39.4in and maximum magnification ration of 1:3.5. This lens is suitable for taking all type of subjects such as portraits, landscape, and close-up pictures. Two SLD (Special Low Dispersion) and three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all types of aberrations. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing capability. The lens design incorporates an inner focusing and inner zooming systems. The overall length of the lens does not change during focusing and zooming, ensuring convenient handling. A removable tripod collar (TS-21) is included as a standard component. When this lens is used with the optional 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters, it becomes a 98-280mm F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or a 140-400mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens respectively.

Like many of you I have been reading reviews of this lens for quite some time. "it's soft at 200mm, it's soft wide open, it's heavy, the finish is ugly" we've all read it. I just got mine last week. If you are buying it for Macro work, I think you can find a better lens. If you are buying it for sports, landscapes, or portrait work, you will love it. I primarily shoot outdoor sports w/ a 100-400L on a Canon 50d. This combo is perfect for soccer, baseball and other field sports with plenty of light. I bought this lens to be my lower light solution. This lens does not disappoint.

Very quick focus, very good image quality, wide open at 2.8 very usable images. Yes it would be nice to have OS, but I don't have the extra $$$ to get it. Yeah, it's heavy, but what do you expect for a lens in this category. It feels small and nimble after packing the 100-400 around for any amount of time. Portraits are very nice and colors are good. It front focuses about 6mm from 6m at 200mm 2.8f, VERY good in my opinion. I will tweak that in-camera when I get time.

Tripod mount is very nice also. Easy to take on and off which is nice, because shooting hand-held it gets in the way of the zoom ring in some positions. I didn't think it was flimsy in any stretch of the imagination.

I am sure that many reviewers have legitimate complaints about this lens, but for me this lens met/exceeded all of my expectations. My only wish is that the zoom ring rotated the same direction as the other Canon lenes.

How to film High Voltage Discharges with a Digital Camera

Short tutorial giving brief explanation of how to film a series of high voltage discharges. Tesla coil used for disruptive discharges. Grounded mirror plate wired to outside RF ground. Super saturated NaCl + H2O solution and discharges to dry plate; greenish glow caused by Mg shavings. Macro lens setting, high ASA or shutter speed, manual focus locked in to avoid focus cycling, caused by rapid alternations in light intensity.

The easy-to-use solution for getting extra close! This set includes 4 lenses: +1, +2 and +4 lenses and a +10 macro adapter that lets you move in as close as 4 (with 50mm lens). Just screw onto lens like a filter and take great close-ups. Each close up lens maintains resolution and picture clarity while magnifying image size. Use the lenses individually or in combination. Olympus 50mm f2 Macro Noise

A lot complain about the noise of the Olympus 50mm f2 Macro - and are waiting for a quiet SWD model to be released. I personally don't find it noisy at all, and so put together this short video of the sound it makes. I suppose it does sound terrible compared to the Olympus 50-200 SWD which I also record - which is impressively quiet, although think that my friends Sigma 50-500 is even quiter. For the sound recording, I was holding the Olympus E-3 with lens attached - only inches away from the built in camera on my Macbook. The sound of the 50mm lens is far worse than it sounds when working with it. Maybe I'm just used to the 50mm and drown out the sound, but I really think that it isn't that bad until you happen to compare it side by side to something like the quieter SWD lenses. What I can say is that I sure wouldn't do without this lens in anticipation of a quieter model coming along - - - just because of the noise (or the speed for that matter - which I also don't find to be a problem in most cases)
